Today, I fulfilled my commitment to the Bring Chicago Home Coalition and the coalition of groups seeking to end homelessness in Chicago. The matter was on the agenda in the Committee on Finance and sought to put a referendum on the 2020 ballot to raise the transfer tax on properties sold in Chicago over the amount of $1,000,000. The proponents of the measure lost a vote to pass the matter in the Committee on Finance, primarily because the proponents sent the matter to the Finance Committee and not the Rules Committee where the jurisdiction for referenda resides.
The proponents were not able to muster the votes that they needed to oppose a motion that the proposal be laid on the table. I fulfilled my commitment to them to bring the matter to the Committee for a vote. I am committed to continue working with the coalition to support measures to provide revenue, mental health services, education and job training to combat homelessness going forward.
