After years of fighting with Governor Rauner, Ald. Pat O’Connor, State Representative Greg Harris, and State Senator Heather Steans announced that the funds for the long awaited Metra Station at Peterson & Ravenswood have been released by Governor J.B. Pritzker.
“I want to thank Senator Steans and Representative Harris for their efforts to see this neighborhood initiative through. I have been working on this for years, starting when Ald. Osterman was a State Representative for that portion of the 40th Ward,” O’Connor said.
“Heather and Greg, because of their experience and leadership roles, were able to keep my request for funding front and center, through four years and marathon budget sessions in the State Capitol.
Metra has been a great partner in this effort as well. They have worked through countless meetings and issues to purchase property and do design work in anticipation of the funding coming through. This project will be transformative for our community, long anticipated and much appreciated.”
Senator Heather Steans remarked, “I believed in this project from the outset. It is important for the community and the people we represent. It will cut peoples’ travel time to downtown and the northern suburbs significantly, reducing stressful commutes and reducing our carbon footprint. This is a good example of government at many levels working for the common good.”
Representative Harris concluded that, “This project has been a top priority for our community for years. Ald. Pat O’Connor’s tireless advocacy has finally made it a reality. I thank Ald. O’Connor for his advocacy that got the project planned and his persistence in the face of Gov. Rauner’s opposition to getting it funded. His determination to improve transit access for the neighborhood will benefit our residents and businesses for generations to come.”
Details of the construction schedule will be forthcoming once Metra identifies what company will be the General Contractor for the project. Community meetings will continue to identify issues related to construction and parking. The dates will be announced shortly.
