My office will be hosting a property tax workshop for Jefferson Township property owners. Commissioner Bridget Gainer’s office will be on hand to assist residents in filing their property tax appeal. The deadline to appeal is August 28, 2017.
When: Thursday, August 17
Where: 20th District Police Station Community Room
Address: 5400 N. Lincoln Avenue
Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Every year, homeowners may appeal their property tax assessment twice – first with the Cook County Assessor’s Office and second with the Cook County Board of Review. Your property tax assessment, or property value, is the first factor used to calculate your property tax bill. Homeowners have the opportunity to appeal their property tax assessment to ensure it is fair and accurate.
The most common reasons to appeal include:
- Lack of Uniformity: the assessed value of your property is not in line with other similar properties in your neighborhood.
- Over-Valuation: the proposed assessed valuation of your property is higher than its actual price.
Property Description Error: this may be an error in the description of your property that adversely affects the assessed valuation or your property has been damaged by a fire, flood, or other casualty and/or part of all of the building has been demolished.
Commissioner Gainer’s office is always happy to assist residents with property tax questions and can be contacted at 312-603-4210.
