CTA Open Fare System 2013
Introducing a new way to pay on CTA!
Next summer, the CTA will introduce an open payment system that will let you choose from several convenient options to pay for bus and train rides, making Chicago the first major U.S. city to adopt an open payment system for transit. With the new payment system, customers will simply “tap” their contactless credit, debit or bank card to board the CTA. The CTA will continue offering special fares, including limited use tickets for one ride, one day, etc., and cash will still be accepted on buses.
The new system is set to launch in spring of 2013 and be fully operational in 2014. If you don’t have a bank account or don’t want to use a bank-issued card, a new, dual-purpose, prepaid card will be made available from CTA that can be used to pay transit fares, and can also be used just about anywhere credit cards are accepted for most retail purchases. You’ll be able to buy a cup of coffee and get on the bus or train with the very same card! Read more.
