I want to thank everyone who participated in our survey to determine which work of art would best suit the West Ridge Nature Preserve. Overall, we had 452 responses voting between “Tree Towers” and “Origami”.
Out of those 452 people that responded, 61.5% voted for the Tree Towers.
Out of 283 people that live within the Ward or close to the preserve, 61% voted for the Tree Towers.
Out of 95 people that identified as “visiting regularly”, 65% voted for the Tree Towers.
Out of 21 people that identified as “visiting regularly and volunteering” at the preserve, 79% voted for the tree towers.
It looks like we have a winner: Tree Towers!
The Tree Towers are sure to enhance the beauty and spirit of the West Ridge Nature Preserve. Thank you all again!

On July 21st, my office announced that after months of collaboration regarding the 50/50 Art Project in the 40th Ward, our group of community members chose the site for the project: The West Ridge Nature Preserve! The art piece will be located near the entrance of the preserve and will be a mosaic of some kind. Please view the two options that the artist: Green Star Movement, created and take our survey to help choose between the two options: Complete survey here. Download artwork here.
In order to choose an artist and a location for the piece, meetings were held with representatives from ASNA, WANT, WEAR, BCO, GRO, NEW and the West Ridge Nature Preserve four times over the course of seven months to discuss our objectives for the project. We had a wonderful group of engaged and thoughtful neighbors representing different areas of our Ward in this process who put in many hours of their and time, and we are very thankful.
Our community members are extremely excited about Green Star Movement. I encourage everyone to check out the beautiful work that they have done and learn more about their process at greenstarmovement.org. Part of why the group chose Green Star Movement was the community engagement element of their work. There will be opportunities for volunteers from our community to work on the art piece.
Please take our survey by this Wednesday, August 2nd at Midnight and you can help to pick between two options presented by Green Star Movement. We know this is a short turnaround, but the sooner we pick a design, the sooner Green Star can begin to fabricate the piece and get it ready for community involvement (beginning around Labor Day) to complete the work.
