City Club has been the stage for momentous announcements, historic debates and enlightened analyses of the important affairs of the region. The original City Club members — the most prominent leaders and opinion-makers in the areas of business, government, media, education and civic affairs have shaped our region’s history and played key roles in its seminal events, the landmark elections and the dramatic changes in public policy.

During his speech, O’Connor said having a new mayor is “an opportunity to reinvent the way we do business and reinvent the way the city does business.” Absent that kind of change, the city will be in trouble, he said.

“We will become a bankrupt society, as opposed to a government that can continue to help the neediest and perform the most essential services,” he said.

City of Chicago 311 Center

311 is an easy-to-remember number to put callers in touch with the vast array of programs and services the City of Chicago has to offer. The 311 operation is available to accept phone calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year for callers to report service needs, check the status of previous service requests, obtain information regarding City programs or events, and file non-emergency police reports.

The 311 technology includes an intake form used to record information from all calls. Responding to each call entails a code for each type of service and a corresponding realistic customer service goal that recognizes organizational demands while meeting customer expectations.

The CSR system creates a service request, assigns a tracking number, prompts a checklist of steps to resolve the problem, and generates work orders and any necessary correspondence. The system can distribute work orders as printed hard copies, uploads to mobile computers, or wireless transmission to PDAs, pagers, and other portable devices.

A call to 311 triggers a series of events. If the caller needs information, a few keystrokes will give the 311 representative access to a database with City information. If the caller requests a City service, intake screens guide the 311 operator to ask for, and enter, the necessary information. If the caller wants to file a non-emergency police report, the operator will connect the caller to a sworn police officer in the Chicago Police Department’s Alternative Response Section (ARS), housed at the 311 Call Center, for assistance.

The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events are partnering with Experimental Station to double the number of Chicago Farmers Markets accepting Link cards during the 2011 season. The pilot program, launched in 2010, will now expand to a total of ten City Farmers Markets: Tuesdays at Lincoln Square and *Federal Plaza; Wednesdays at South Shore and *Pullman Market; Thursdays at Daley Plaza and *Hyde Park; Saturdays at Division Street and *Bridgeport; Sundays at Beverly and *Wicker Park/Bucktown. North Park Village Nature Center

Located on the northwest side of Chicago and includes a forty-six acre nature preserve and also an educational facility. The Nature Center and preserve are situated within the North Park Village complex, a cluster of buildings located on approximately 155 acres of land.

The nature preserve features trails that wind through woodlands, wetlands, praire and savannas. A discovery room, a hands-on table of natural objects and interactive displays are highlights of the Nature Center. Programs offered include public programs for pre-schoolers, school age children, families and adults; an eco-explorers summer camp and outreach programs.
