The Lincoln Foundation, located at 6525 N. Clark Street, celebrated the opening of its food pantry on May 1st. Alderman O’Connor was on hand to tour the facility and also had the honor of being apart of the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The recently opened food pantry is the first non-denominational pantry opened in East Rogers Park in 20 years. The pantry is currently servicing approximately 550 people per month, and the only requirement to receive food is a signature at time of pick up.

For many years, the Avenue of Flags has been a tradition at Rosehill Cemetery during Memorial Day Weekend.

The flags have been donated by famiily and friends of departed veterans. These flags lined the path of the parade route which proceeded to the Veterans’ Memorial Rose Garden. The somber event included a number of military rituals such as roll call of the honored dead who lost their lives this year; the folding and presentation of the flag; and a 21 gun salute followed by taps.

A special thanks to our Troops serving around and their families.

The best way to protect your children is to be with them. Start planning now to make the 4th a family day. Picnics, games, movies — you decide. Top them off with a magnificent fireworks display put on by a professional pyrotechnic company.

Our community is fortunate that we will have two free shows at our lakefront. I recommend that you pack up refreshments and a blanket and take the Foster or Lawrence or Peterson bus to the lake.

On Saturday, July 3rd the outstanding Saddle and Cycle Display can be seen. The show takes place at Foster Beach.

On Sunday, July 4th the City is starting a new tradition. Instead of a gigantic show in the loop, there will be 3 barges in the lake putting on a synchronized show at 9:00 p.m. The nearest show is 2,000 feet off the lake between Foster and Lawrence.

The City has been preparing for this for months. Margate Park will be the police/fire staging area and many Uptown side streets will be closed East of Broadway.

We are expecting between 350,000 and 400,000 people. There will be all sorts of additional public transportation and city services. So join us. Relax. Have some safe fun.
The CTA has made special arrangements for the 4th of July include:

• 147 bus will run but may be diverted to Broadway north of Hollwood
• Time between redline trains will be reduced by 5 minutes
• Trains will be lengthened from 4 to 6 cars
• staging area on Marine Drive for buses
• No parking on Marine Drive because of staging buses. Margate Park Field House will be the command center for police, fire and emergency services

East – West Streets south of Foster will be closed that evening at a time to be determined. Tow trucks will be available to tow illegally parked cars. Port-a-potties will be numerous and scattered throughout the area. There is a great scarcity of parking in the area so we recommend; Take Public Transportation

Alderman Patrick J. O’Connor is proud to have helped the Edgewater Historical Society find a home in the 40th Ward.

A former fire station was being used for environmental purposes and was no longer needed. We helped facilitate the transfer of the building to the Edgewater Historical Society.

For the time period of June through September, 2010 admission will be free. In addition to being open on Saturdays from noon until 4:00 p.m. the museum will be open on Sundays for the next 4 months.

There will be contests and special activities on Sundays. The museum is located at 5358 N. Ashland. The museum is available by special appointment to school classes and groups.

We’re gardening for Victory on the corner of Peterson and Campbell just like they did during WW2 but, with your help, we’re going to do it even BETTER!

Unity in Chicago and Goldie’s Place will sponsor a two-part/two-day community job fair on Saturday, May 8th and Friday, May 21st from 10 am to 3 pm each day held at Unity in Chicago, located at 1925 W. Thome Avenue to benefit 350 pre-registered participants.

Day One will consist of five different workshops conducted by job placement professionals. There will be 25 employability specialists on hand to counsel attendees on resume writing, the interview process, efficient networking information, personal presentation techniques and personal attitudes required for successful job search activity. On Day Two, participants will meet with employers seeking to hire.

We have implemented the two-day resource and employment model to assist employers by pre-screening job seekers for soft and hard skills and providing education and support services to job seekers who need a little help in becoming job ready.

The article titled “How to Green Your Parents” focuses on the philosophy of connecting kids to their environment. The Rogers Park Montessori School is located at Balmoral & Ravenswood within the Bowmanville Community.

O’Connor’s 27th Annual Golf Outing, to be held at the Robert Black Golf Course (Pratt and Ridge), on Saturday June 5, 2010, Tee times are available between 7:00a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and food will be served from 11:00am to 4:30pm at the golf course.

If you prefer a late tee time, you may plan to arrive early for lunch. Carts are available on a limited basis and need to be reserved in advance. The 40th Ward Organization would appreciate if you would sponsor a hole on the golf course.

The cost of the hole sponsorship is $100.00. The names of sponsors will be displayed on the golf course for all golfers to see. Proceeds from this event are used to fund many worthwhile programs that strengthen our community and our city.
