CTA Reductions in Bus Service

In an effort to address current economic challenges while continuing to provide service to all areas, the CTA has made reductions that are designed to retain as much service as possible.

#X49 Western Express Route Elimination

This bus route will be eliminated.

Alternate bus service is available on the #49 Western, the #49B North Western (between Berwyn and the Brown Line), and the #49A South Western (between 79th and 98th).

#49B North Western Reduced Hours of Service

The hours of service on this route will be reduced. Service periods will be revised as follows:

Weekdays:

  • Service will begin later, with the first southbound trip leaving Western/Howard at 4:20amand the first northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 4:40am.
  • Service will end earlier, with the last southbound trip leaving Western/Howard  at12:15am and the last northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 12:35am.

Saturdays:

  • Service will begin later, with the first southbound trip leaving Western/Howard at 4:30amand the first northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 4:45am.
  • Service will end earlier, with the last southbound trip leaving Western/Howard  at12:15am and the last northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 12:30am.

Sundays/Holidays:

  • Service will begin later, with the first southbound trip leaving Western/Howard at 5:20amand the first northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 5:40am.
  • Service will end earlier, with the last southbound trip leaving Western/Howard  at12:30am and the last northbound trip leaving Western (Brown Line) at 12:45am.

#49B North Western Frequency Change

Service will also operate less frequently during the following periods:

Weekdays:

  • During the morning rush period, service will operate approximately every 7-20 minutes.
  • During the midday, service will operate approximately every 12-16 minutes.
  • During the afternoon rush period, service will operate approximately every 8-13 minutes.
  • During the evening, service will operate approximately every 15-20 minutes.

Saturdays:

  • During the morning, service will operate approximately every 15-30 minutes.
  • During the midday, service will operate approximately every 15-18  minutes.
  • During the afternoon, service will operate approximately every 15-16 minutes.
  • During the evening, service will operate approximately every 14-20 minutes.
  • During the late evening, service will operate approximately every 15-30 minutes.

Sundays/Holidays:

  • During the morning, service will operate approximately every 20-21 minutes.
  • During the midday, service will operate approximately every 15-20 minutes.
  • During the afternoon, service will operate approximately every 15-18 minutes.
  • During the evening, service will operate approximately every 15-20 minutes.
  • During the late evening, service will operate approximately every 16-30 minutes.
