Pedestrian Crossing Improvement

On August16th, The Chicago Department of Transportation, in conjunction with Alderman Patrick O’Connor, will undertake improvements designed to enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection of Clark and Thome Streets.

The location was identified as an area of concern by community leaders, including officials at Hayt School, Centro Romero, Safe Kids Illinois, Ald. O’Connor and the 24th District Police. Although there is no crosswalk at the location, students from Stephen K. Hayt Elementary School often need to cross the street at that location to attend Centro Romero.

The improvements are estimated to cost $49,000. The project has received over $30,000 in grants from Safe Kids Worldwide www.safekids.org, a network of organizations working to prevent childhood injury. Alderman O’Connor secured the additional funds needed to make the project possible.

The improvements include:

  • A raised concrete median to serve as a pedestrian refuge island
  • International-style crosswalk markings
  • “School” pavement markings for north- and southbound traffic
  • Extra signage to identify the crosswalk

The work is scheduled to begin on August 18th with a projected completion date of September 11, 2010.
